1890s Heirloom variety. Highly productive, produces 50-100 dark-green Brussels sprouts (florets) over an extended period. Compact plants produce sturdy spikes with edible florets that mature from the bottom up and take on sweeter tones after a light frost. A slow-growing, long-season vegetable that requires an even supply of water, Brussels sprouts also survive frost and light snowfalls.
Companion plants: Alliums, Basil, Beans, Beets, Carrots, Mint, Peas, Thyme, Marigold, Nasturtium.
Far from: Potato, Tomato, Peppers, Eggplant, Mustard.
Planting tip: Direct seeds as soon as the soil can be worked. It can be started indoors 4-6 weeks before the planting date.
Harvesting tip: Sprout begins formation at the bottom of the stalk. When these reach thumb size, pinch the top to encourage uniform top sprouts. Harvest bottom-up when 1-1.15” in diameter.
Storage tip: Store at 1-2°C at 95% humidity for 3-5 weeks. Also freezable.
